Week 4- Post 3

I liked how Locke took us back in time and encouraged us to think about life before governments were in the picture. He then introduced natural rights and why they make sense. It made me like this lesson more because he started from base 1 and went into the origin of what our original rights are and why they are our original rights.

My questions are:

  • If Locke believes that no one is born to be a king or a queen, and that there is no hierarchy, how does he think that Monarchys should work? Or does he think they should just not exist?
  • Locke/libertarians believe that everyone is equal(since everyone is equal in the state of nature), but that contradicts a lot of historical events that happened because of discrimination/inequality. So at those times were there just not a lot of libertarians around? Has the amount of libertarians increased over time?
  • Can someone still be called a libertarian if they do not believe every thing that libertarians stand for? Because I feel like it would be uncommon to have someone be able to agree with every single thing libertarians talk about.

  1. If Locke believed that everyone was equal how di he feel about slavery and the rights of women?

    1. I'm not completely sure, slavery and gender inequality involve the taking or undermining of other people's fundamental rights which makes it immoral according Locke's belief. But I think if someone were to actually ask him he would still find a way to justify it in his mind somehow. I don't know how he would though.
